6 Powerful Ways To Invest In Yourself
We live in a world where people believe that in order to get ahead, they need more.
More money, more things, more of the external is what we are told will fill us up and help us to achieve our goals.
“If I could just buy those pair of shoes, I would be so much happier”
“Once I get that promotion, I won’t have to worry about money again”
We are so used to investing in things outside of ourselves. Looking for validation from the external and wondering why we constantly come out empty.
The truth, I believe, is that as a society we have lost touch with ourselves. We do not know how to look at the internal for what we want. We don’t know what it looks like to truly invest in ourselves.
As an entrepreneur, I have learned that the only way that I will truly be able to gain the success that I desire is not through the external, but by investing in myself.
You should be doing the same.
If you do not invest in yourself, nobody else who will. We all need tough love once in a while…right?!
in this post. I will be detailing what it means to invest in yourself, why it is important and what I believe to be the most important and powerful investments that you can make for yourself TODAY.
What Does It mean To Invest In Yourself?
Do you ever think about your future self?
By that, I mean the version of you 5, 10,15 years from now. Do you ever think about what she thinks about the decisions that you are making today?
Investing in yourself is really just about thinking about your future self and thinking about their needs ahead of your own.
Are you making decisions today that your future self would be happy with? Or are you robbing your future self of money, health, peace of mind?
I recently listened to a podcast where the host mentioned that she gave her future self a name. When she is looking to make an important decision, she thinks about that avatar she has created and allows her future self to give her advice. Cool huh?
Why It Is Important To Invest In Yourself
Investing in yourself simply means investing in your future. It is all about doing things today that future YOU would be happy about. By investing in yourself, you are focusing on your personal growth and development over things that are external.
When you really think about it, you realize that the external things, the ones that we are so often chasing (and investing in) are fleeting. What is more important is internal. So if we can look within and address those areas that need to be attended to, I think we would find much growth.
I agree with Warren Buffet (the greatest investor of all time) who was quoted saying that “The best investment that you can make is in yourself.”
In his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey talks about a concept I like to think of as the golden egg rule.
He tells the story of a man who finds an egg made of pure gold in the nest of his goose. This goose was laying 1 golden egg every day. This should have been enough for this man to survive on. But he wanted more. He was convinced that if he could break open the goose, he would be able to get all the eggs at once and make more money. Of course, this was not the case. Once he ‘broke open’ the goose, he killed it and could no longer get any more golden eggs.
The Lesson is this– in order for the man to continue to get the golden eggs, there needed to be a balance between what was produced (in this case the golden egg) and the thing that produces (the goose). Some people might think that all that matters is the product (the golden egg) and doing whatever it takes to get more of it. What Covey shows us is that true effectiveness is a result of both the production and the production capability.
I like to believe that this concept can be applied to all areas of our lives.
If we truly want to get ahead, be more effective in life, we also have to take care of ourselves. More results will not always move us ahead if we are not intentional about taking care of that which creates the results.
Personal development and investing in ones self is a continual process that is crucial to success.
You see, you are the most powerful and most influential person in your life. Which means there is no one else more capable of supporting or undermining your success as you!
The great thing is that there are so many ways in which you can invest in yourself.
6 Ways To Invest In Yourself
It is important to cultivate the habit of regular exercise. Exercise is not only a means to lose weight and build strength. By doing regular exercise, you are investing in your health.
Exercise also helps to boost your mood and ability to concentrate.
Try to read for at least 20 minutes every day. Reading is such a great habit to build as we now know that reading not only reduce stress, it also is great for memory improvement.
Whether you are reading for information or for entertainment, you will still reap the positive benefits that reading has.
With the way the internet is right now, there is no shortage of places to go for information.
Investing in your knowledge and skills ensures that no matter what direction the economy moves, you will have the capacity to sustain your wealth.
I like to use Udemy and Skillshare for classes. Between those sites, you can learn about pretty much any topic you can think of.
Especially when it comes to your area of practice, you should constantly be looking to improve yourself through continual learning.
I recently took a Personal Branding Course on Skillshare and I found it to be very informative.
I also have taken several other courses related to blogging recently.
- Pinterest With Ell
- Blog Monetization Course by her HerPaperRoute
- Affiliate Marketing for Bloggers by Kimi Kinsey
I was previously very hesitant to invest in courses, but these have been valuable in providing me with the information that I need to get this blog from just an idea in my head to reality.
If you are looking to start a blog, the 3 areas I would recommend focusing on in terms of education are
- Pinterest- Because you need traffic for your blog
- Affiliate Links- Great way to earn passive income
- Some sort of monetization training/ course- you need to understand all your options if you do decide that you would like to monetize your blog.
Hire A Coach
I used to think that hiring a coach was a complete waste of money. I didn’t understand why I would pay someone to figure things out that I could just google or get for free elsewhere.
You see, I was missing the point.
Everything you will ever want to know can be found for free somewhere. The internet is so vast that I am confident of this. A coach is so important because they walk you through the process and empower you to bring about the change that you need.
I also realized that it wasn’t the coach that I was investing in, but in my future. Did I believe that my future was worth that amount of money? The truth is that for a long time the answer was NO. That was not because of any coach, but because of me. Simply because I did not believe I was worthy of it.
Whether you choose to invest in a life coach, a business coach or career coach, I think it is important to invest in this way as you will see considerably more results that if you were to try to do things on your own.
Start A Side Hustle
A side hustle is a job or business endeavour that you choose to pursue on the ‘side’ or outside of your regular day job. A lot of people have side hustles these days as the cost of living increases at a faster rate than pay increase.
A side hustle is a great way to invest in your future as it allows you to reach certain financial goals faster.
This is one that is often overlooked by society. There is this idea that in order to be successful, you need to appear busy. This mindset has resulted in a whole generation of people who are working tirelessly with no clear goal or end point. I strongly believe that we need to invest in ourselves and prioritize self care in order to be more productive.
The best investment that you can make is in YOU. Whether it is by investing time, money or energy, always strive to be doing things that would make the +10, +20, +30 year old version of you happy.
